Over the last few weeks, through reading the various blog posts, my thinking regarding inclusion and PLN has evolved greatly. The readings have not only expanded my understanding regarding why inclusion is important but it has also made clear the power social media has in creating inclusive PLNs.
When it comes to my field of study, as a Computer Science major, my main professional setting would be the tech industry. Evidently, in the tech sector, social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for networking, offering a unique space for like-minded people to connect, and to learn from each other. In the context of inclusion, social media is quite powerful at breaking down physical barriers and allowing the exchange of diverse perspectives across geographical locations. As a result, this gives professionals the opportunity for global networking. Numerous software platforms like Twitter or LinkedIn provide individuals from various backgrounds, industries, and experiences the opportunity to engage with different voices. This broadens their perspectives and makes their PLN more powerful.
When it comes to devising a strategy to create a PLN prior to engaging in a social media, there are a number of things to consider. Mainly, it is crucial that you have a main goal and that you define your objectives of your social media campaign. Moreover, according to the specific topic of choice, it is also critical to become involved in specific events, whether this consists of joining relevant groups or forums. By joining these groups, you can share your own expertise on your chosen topic, as well as engage with other people. This active involvement goes beyond just networking; it establishes you as a valuable contributor within the community, fostering meaningful connections and collaborations that extend beyond the virtual realm. As the saying goes, “Your network is your net worth,” and in the digital age, social media serves as the bridge to expand and enhance the value of your professional network.
